For a fuller understanding of my lists . . .
Please read my general lists notes first.

... followed by the...
Particular Notes below, regarding this list.

  1. The following 955, or so, records, tabulated on this page are not to be taken as factual proof of an entry in the original document's.  In the course of producing this list, mistakes can have taken place in the transcription, in the reading of the original text (from microfilm) by the webmaster and several original writers have spellings of names and places in a different way than one might expect today.  Family Historians should be accustomed to such anomalies and make allowances for this - check the original!
  2. There are TWO lists in DATE ORDER (contrary to the impression you may get from the first few records which are in alphabetic order over the period 1612 to 1660 ) with the later table of records containing more detailed information.
  3. It is understood that some of the original records are missing, therefore, there will be a gap or gaps in the data.  Your browser will have the facility to FIND ON THIS PAGE (Ctrl + F with Internet Explorer) and you should use this to allow you to FIND a name or place - remember various spellings - search for just a 2 or 3 letters of a name for variations - have a look at the early entries for examples of just how varied the spellings are to what we would expect. (As explained in the general notes, some of the spellings have been 'modernised' to facilitate searches.)
  4. Any names showing TMS are mentioned in the book, 'The Monikie Story' which can be purchased from this website.  This gives an excellent insight of the parish over many years, from the times BC.
  5. The codes (e.g. J05) are the code numbers given to the gravestones or memorials in Monikie Kirkyard, the text and a few photographs of which can be inspected on this site.
  6. If you find these lists interesting you are recommended to 'Copy & Paste' the contents of the tables below into a a text editor application.
  7. Should you, as is recommended, refer to the original source regarding any particular entries, and find any errors please advice the webmaster.
Source information
  • Burials between 1612-1660 were on one page, only names but sometimes listed where they lived, no specific dates listed other than the page heading.
  • Burials 1783-1790 contained names, where lived, relation in family (son of, wife of), specific date in one column another column headed "King's Dues" and last column had no heading but contained either '3' or 'poor', it had a symbol which may have been a small 'd', that referred to "pence" in those days. (240 'old' pence in a GB Pound).
  • There is a note after July 31, 1790 "received no King's Dues for burials after this date".
  • One last entry on page is dated 1838.
  • Starts again at Jan 2, 1793 to July 24, 1824, what now looks like a ledger and in a different hand, lists Mortcloth and has 2 columns with no headings, but most entries have a number in column 1 and a few have a #8 in column 2.
  • There is a note at the end of this "ledger" - "The 100 entries contained on this and the preceding 3 pages are extracted from the Sessional Register of Monikie in the custody of the Session Clerk in terms of the Acts 17 & 18 Vict. Cop 80 and 23 & 24 Vict cop 85, signed W. Pitt, Dundee, Registrar General."  I'm pretty sure I read it correctly. The 100 entries start at January 1820 and finish at July 1824. the whole ledger appears to be in the same hand.
  • The next section is the Monikie Register of Deaths 1841-1854.  This appears to be across 2 pages in a ruled book, Session Clerk for the whole time is signed as W. M. Alexander.  There are 7 columns to the Register.
  • There are two abstracts of deaths; the first is for 1842-47, tallies up males, females and stillborns per year along with cause of death totals, in this abstract more died of old age than any other cause of death.
  • The second is for 1848-1854, same tallies, the leading cause of death is still old age, followed very closely by consumption and the scarlet fever epidemic.
  • There is a third extract from 1855-1861 same tallies with the leading cause of death still being old age.  This is not listed here - too bad the register was not available, but we are now into the 1855+ Statutory Registration era. (Read on)
